About

In 1924, V.M. "Punch" Hughes started a rolling grocery store, he also made pork sausage on the side for a little extra income. Friends and neighbors who needed a little extra income also came by to help. One of those was Sid Partin, who eventually started his own business, Partin's Country Sausage.
As time when by a store and packing house were constructed, Punch's son, Robert L. Hughes, bought the business in 1951, and continued the grocery store and production of Hughes' Country Sausage. Only once was the family business not in the family. Robert sold the business in 1953 to Joe Harry Metzger and Harlen Dowdy, but he bought it back 4 months later.
Alan Hughes, Robert's son, began working in the family business with his father. As the demand for quality meat rose, Hughes' Market began making fresh hamburger patties for area restaurants and continues to deliver them to this day. Alan also branched out into processing deer for local hunters, where he produced many speciality items such as deer or elk summer sausage, deer bologna, and venison jerky. Sadly there just isn't enough time in the day anymore to process deer, but he still produces many of the specialty products such as venison bacon, deer sticks and summer sausage.
Today you will find Alan's son, Clay, making fresh hamburger patties, running the smokehouse or producing several of the homemade products they offer, from homemade pimento cheese, boudin sausage, to several varieties of smoked cheese.
Hughes' Market, where butchering is still an art.
