Cue the BBQ Weekend!
Dawson Springs has been perfecting its summer barbecue tradition for 78 years. This July, the smoke rolls again, carrying live music, hometown pride and enough sauce to justify wearing a napkin as formal attire.
Friday Brings the Feast
The 78th Annual Dawson Springs BBQ returns July 24 and 25, bringing one of Hopkins County’s largest annual festivals back to town. Friday begins at the Dawson Springs Community Center, where barbecue will be served for dine-in guests from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., or until it disappears, and through a drive-thru from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
By evening, the celebration moves downtown for a street fair from 6 to 9 p.m. Vendors, food trucks, a beer garden and old-fashioned fair games will fill the area while Instant Zeal provides the live soundtrack. At 8:30 p.m., the annual raffle drawing takes place at Veterans Park, followed by a special fireworks display celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. Fireworks are not usually part of the barbecue weekend, so this year’s show adds a little extra sparkle to an already well-seasoned tradition.
Saturday Keeps It Moving
Saturday starts early with the BBQ 5K at 7:30 a.m., giving runners a chance to earn their barbecue before most festivalgoers have finished their first cup of coffee. The downtown square then welcomes the BBQ Car Show beginning at 8 a.m., with vintage vehicles, family activities and plenty of polished chrome competing with the July sunshine.
Golfers can head to Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park for the annual scramble, while visitors who prefer less athletic pursuits can continue browsing, eating and catching up with neighbors. Barbecue by the pound and the festival’s famous sauce by the pint will also be available at Dawson Springs Food Giant, making it possible to take a little of the weekend home.
The Dawson Springs BBQ has long served as more than a meal. It supports the community center and functions as a hometown reunion, drawing residents, alumni and visitors together in a town that understands the value of showing up for one another.
After nearly eight decades, the recipe still works: good food, familiar faces and a full weekend built around community.
