Pick a Tree or Pick a Bag

In Georgetown, Evans Orchard & Cider Mill grows numerous apple varieties, offers U-pick apples when available and presses fresh cider. It is the kind of place where the original plan to “just grab some apples” can get sidetracked quickly.

At Eckert’s Versailles Orchard, the outing leans more toward a full afternoon. Visitors can head into the orchard for pick-your-own apples, ride a tractor, browse the country store and make room for bakery treats and family activities along the way.

For apple people who like something a little less ordinary, Hidden Hollow Orchard specializes in heirloom and unusual apple varieties. That gives the season a different kind of appeal, especially for anyone who would rather come home with a fruit they cannot always find in a supermarket bin.

The Market Matters, Too

In Nancy, Haney’s Appledale Farm grows more than 25 apple varieties and sells hand-picked fruit, cider, baked goods and other treats at its market.

Up in Hebron, McGlasson Farms carries on a multigenerational family-farm tradition with an apple orchard, roadside market and seasonal U-pick opportunities. It is a reminder that the best part of apple season is not always climbing into the orchard. Sometimes it is walking away with a bag somebody else already filled.

In Shelbyville, Mulberry Orchard folds its apple season into a larger farm outing, with fall admission and family activities plus the Mulberry Kitchen serving as another reason to linger.

The one rule worth remembering is that orchards run on harvest time, not calendar certainty. Apple varieties, picking windows and crop availability can change quickly, so checking websites or calling ahead can save a long drive built around a variety that finished ripening last week.
