A Fright Beneath the Surface!

A Fright Beneath the Surface!

Take Halloween underground this year. Jack-o-Lantern Cave returns October 23–24, 2026, to Carter Caves State Resort Park in Olive Hill, putting a cave-country spin on the usual October festivities.

Halloween Heads Underground

Caves don’t need much help setting an October mood, but jack-o’-lanterns certainly don’t hurt. The seasonal event gives families a playful reason to head below ground while experiencing the landscape that makes Carter Caves such a distinctive part of eastern Kentucky.

Halloween may get you through the entrance, but there’s a whole underground world to explore while you’re there. The park’s caving experiences give visitors several ways to see what’s beneath the hills.

X Cave follows a quarter-mile route through two distinctly different passageways, where visitors encounter rock formations, cave ecology, and local history. The approximately 45-minute tour includes narrow passages, some stooping, and 75 stairs, so it’s one Halloween outing where sensible shoes beat costume footwear.

Cascade Cave offers a longer adventure, with a roughly three-quarter-mile route that takes about 75 minutes. The tour winds through large cave chambers before reaching one of the park’s most memorable features, a 30-foot underground waterfall. With 225 stairs along the route, you’ll get a bit of a workout with the sightseeing.

Come for the Pumpkins, Meet the Caves

Jack-o-Lantern Cave puts a seasonal spin on a landscape that’s interesting enough without Halloween decorations. Families can make an October outing of it while getting a closer look at the geology and natural history that have shaped this corner of the state.

The underground exploring doesn’t have to end when the jack-o’-lanterns go dark. The park’s caves offer plenty more to discover beyond Halloween, so an October visit might just give you a reason to come back and see what’s beneath the surface in another season.
