A Season for Showing Up

The holidays have a way of filling calendars fast. This year, Kentucky organizations are making room for something else: a few hours spent helping neighbors celebrate, eat well, and make Christmas feel a little brighter.

In Fort Mitchell, St. Vincent de Paul Northern Kentucky is preparing for Vincent’s Angels, a Christmas program that gives local families a chance to select gifts for their children. Volunteers are needed December 17, with opportunities to help families shop, wrap presents, restock tables, and pitch in with setup and cleanup. For anyone who prefers a hands-on volunteer shift, there’s plenty to do before the last bow gets tied.

The giving stretches well beyond Northern Kentucky. The Toy Chest is gearing up for its 2026 Christmas Project and December 12 Santa’s Workshop. Its service opportunities give you several ways to join in, including volunteering, sponsoring a child, organizing toy or clothing drives, and donating items for children across the state.

A Little Time Goes a Long Way

Louisville has its own December lineup. Kosair for Kids will host its Holiday Party on December 6, with volunteers helping support an event centered on Kentucky children and families.

For those who’d rather roll up their sleeves around the dinner table, Dare to Care Food Bank has volunteer opportunities focused on getting groceries directly to neighbors. On December 12, volunteers can help with a drive-up mobile pantry in Louisville, distributing food to families who need it. Another Dare to Care Mobile Pantry follows on December 21, just days before Christmas.

There’s no single right way to show up during the holidays. Sometimes it looks like wrapping a toy. Sometimes it’s loading groceries into a trunk or spending an afternoon helping a family prepare for Christmas. However you pitch in, those few hours can bring neighbors together and make the season a little more meaningful for everyone involved.
