Before Fall Gets Loud

Before Fall Gets Loud

Pumpkins can wait. September still has green fields, garden harvests, outdoor music, and evenings that are finally cooling down, making Harrodsburg a particularly good place to catch Kentucky between seasons.

A Little Summer, A Little Fall

The sweet spot between summer and fall is easy to find at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, where the historic buildings are surrounded by working farmland, gardens, and trails. In September, the landscape hasn’t traded green for fall color yet, but the growing season is already making its way from the garden to the table.

The Village’s garden produces vegetables, herbs, and other seasonal ingredients used at The Trustees’ Table, where Kentucky cooking follows what’s growing nearby. Local farmers also supply ingredients, so sitting down for a meal feels connected to the farmland you’ve just spent the day walking past.

September evenings give you a particularly good excuse to stick around. Music on the Lawn continues Friday and Saturday evenings throughout September, bringing live music and outdoor dining beside the garden. Grab dinner, settle into a chair, and enjoy one of those increasingly rare evenings when the temperature cooperates and nobody needs a jacket yet.

Take the Long Way Home

The day doesn’t have to end when you leave Shaker Village. A short drive into downtown Harrodsburg brings you to Blackbird Café, a Main Street café inside the historic Dedman’s Drugstore building. It’s an easy stop for coffee, a homemade meal, or something sweet before heading home.

Together, the two stops make a pretty convincing case for not fast-forwarding through September. There’s still plenty of summer left in the landscape, while gardens and kitchens are already shifting toward the next season.

October will bring the foliage, pumpkins, festivals, and packed fall calendars. September offers something quieter: green countryside, food grown nearby, historic spaces, and an evening outside while the season changes around you.
