Halloween is close enough that Kentucky procrastinators may want to stop saying “I’ll figure it out” and start figuring it out. Fortunately, there are still plenty of places to build a convincing costume before October 31.
Start With the Last-Minute Basics

Costumes for adults and kids share space with wigs, masks, makeup and accessories, making it an easy first stop when the original costume plan never quite became a plan.
In Louisville, Caufield’s Novelty takes Halloween considerably further. The family-owned shop has been around since 1920 and carries costumes, masks, wigs, professional makeup, props, decorations and theatrical supplies. That century-plus of experience comes in handy when the assignment is more complicated than “find me a witch hat by Friday.”
Sometimes, though, the costume is already halfway there. A convincing wig, dramatic mask or good makeup can do enough heavy lifting to rescue something that started with ordinary clothes from the closet.

The good news about last-minute costume shopping is that “last minute” does not have to look like it. Start with the character or idea, figure out the one or two pieces doing most of the visual work, and focus there. A complete transformation is great, but one strong accessory can sometimes save the whole thing.
