Growing Confidence, One Student at a Time

Some kids collect sports cards. Some collect rocks. The luckiest collect something even more valuable: caring adults who show up, listen, and believe in them. That kind of steady support can shape a child's future, which is why Notre Dame Urban Education Center (NDUEC) plays such an important role in the Covington community.

Founded by the Sisters of Notre Dame in 2009, NDUEC serves students from Pre-K to ninth grade through a combination of education, enrichment, and family support. The organization provides early learning programs, after-school tutoring, homework assistance, literacy and math interventions, and engaging activities that extend learning beyond the school day. 

What sets NDUEC  apart is its deeply personal approach. Students aren't treated like numbers on a roster.  They’re known, encouraged, and inspired by educators with more than 130 years of combined teaching experience. That support is amplified by more than 300 dedicated volunteers who share their time and talents throughout the year.

The 2026 Best of Kentucky Award is a fitting honor for an organization that has invested in children and families for more than sixteen years.  What began with Summer Academics in 2010 has grown into a comprehensive network of educational and family support services, including Homework Plus, Family Support Nights (2013), and the Early Learning Program (2019), allowing NDUEC to deepen its impact in the community while remaining mission focused. 

Every tutoring session, every family event, and STEM activity helps build confidence, curiosity, and opportunity. In Covington, Notre Dame Urban Education Center is doing more than helping children to succeed in school. It is helping them build brighter futures, one child, one family, and one relationship at a time.
