Stars, Snacks & Screen Time!

Kentucky’s summer cinemas come with fireflies, picnic blankets and popcorn that may or may not survive until the opening credits. Across the commonwealth, public parks are proving that a roof is entirely optional for a good movie night.

Parks Become Picture Shows

In Lexington, Friday Flicks turns Jacobson Park into a family-friendly theater on select summer evenings. Activities begin at 7 p.m., with movies starting after dark. Families can bring blankets, lawn chairs and a picnic or visit the food vendors on-site. The 2026 schedule runs into August, giving Lexington residents another chance to catch a free screening before school routines return. 

Louisville gives the concept a downtown backdrop with the Downtown Drive-In at Waterfront Park’s Brown-Forman Amphitheater. Despite the name, guests settle onto blankets and lawn chairs rather than watching through a windshield. Free screenings continue on select Fridays into October, making the series part movie night, part riverside gathering and part excuse to linger downtown after dinner. 

In Glasgow, Movies Under The Stars brings residents to Beaver Creek Park for free screenings presented by Glasgow Parks & Recreation. Food vendors and pre-movie activities give families time to visit before the screen lights up, while the park setting keeps the evening relaxed. It is the sort of hometown plan that requires little more than folding chairs, bug spray and agreement on who carries the snacks. 

Community Comes Before the Credits

Western Kentucky joins in through Movies in the Park, hosted by Paducah Parks & Recreation. The Thursday evening series unfolds at Bob Noble Park, where an inflatable screen rises near the Music Garden between the pool and Lake Gerry B. Montgomery. Movies begin at dusk, usually around 8 to 8:15 p.m., and admission is free. 

The films may bring people out, but the larger appeal is the shared experience. These events support food vendors, introduce families to local parks and create affordable evenings when entertainment budgets feel especially tight. Children can play before sunset, neighbors can catch up and adults can enjoy a night out without calculating ticket prices for the entire household.

Sometimes Kentucky’s best screen comes with stars overhead and grass beneath your chair.
